Importance of the Diwali Festival

According to Hindu legend, Lord Ram, his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman returned to their hometown of Ayodhya on the day of Diwali after conquering the evil king Ravana. People in Ayodhya ignited lamps and candles across the city and danced all night long to commemorate the 14-year exile of their beloved and revered king Ram.

Sikhs refer to Diwali as "Bandi Chhor Diwas" because this was the day that Guru Hargobind Singh, their sixth guru, and 52 other princes were liberated from Gwalior prison by Mughal emperor Jahangir and restored to the Golden Temple in Amritsar. As a result, Amritsar residents lit up the entire city with candles and lights, and this tradition has persisted ever since.

Similar to how Western India reveres the day as the one on which Lord Vishnu defeated the demon King Bali to rule the underworld, Southern India celebrates Diwali as the day when Lord Krishna vanquished the demon Narakasura.
