What exactly is the IPL?

The IPL is a Twenty20 cricket league in India which features ten (earlier eight) teams representing different cities in India. Each team has players from all over the world, including famous cricketers who come together to play for their team.

Format of IPL

During the IPL 2023 season, a total of 74 matches will be contested by the 10 participating teams. Teams are divided into two groups (A and B). 

A random draw is used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.

During the group stage, every team competes in a total of 14 matches against the other four teams within their group twice (once at home and once away), each of the four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team twice.

IPL Points Table system

The team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. If a team loses, they won't get any points, but if the game ends in a tie or no result, both teams will receive 1 point.

After the group stage, a four-game playoff stage is held using the Page playoff system. The playoffs consist of four games:

Qualifier 1: featuring the top two teams from the group stage.

Eliminator: featuring the third and fourth ranked teams from the group stage.

Qualifier 2: featuring the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator.

Final: featuring the winners of Qualifiers 1 and 2.
